How to make Aloo Matar simple yet delicious

Aloo Matar is a simple but delicious dish. It is very popular in North India and all over the country. It is made with potatoes, peas, and mild spices. It is like a curry with onion-tomato gravy. We get nutrients from both potatoes and peas. It can be made more healthy by making it with less oil and spices. Let's see how it can be made in a healthy way:



Let's see, What do we need to make this curry,

  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

  • 1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped

  • 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped

  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil  

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder

  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)

  • Salt, to taste

  • Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (for garnish)

  • Water, as needed



Method of making Aloo Matar curry:

  • Heat oil in a pan.

  • Add cumin seeds and saute for a few seconds till aromatic.

  • Add chopped onions and saute till golden brown.

  • When onions are cooked, add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies and saute for 1-2 minutes till the raw smell disappears.

  • Now add chopped tomatoes and cook till they become soft.

  • When the oil starts separating from the tomato mixture, add all the dry spices (turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, red chili powder, and salt) and mix well. Cook this masala for 2-3 minutes. If needed, you can add a little water so that the spices do not burn.

  • After this, add chopped potatoes and green peas to these masala. Mix the vegetables well with the spices, and saute for 2 to 3 minutes.

  • Now add 1-2 cups of water and mix well. Cover the pan and let the curry cook on low flame for 15-20 minutes. Keep stirring it in between so that it does not burn.

  • When the curry is cooked, add roasted cumin powder and mix. Let it boil for 2-3 minutes and then turn off the gas. Garnish with green coriander.

  • Serve it hot with hot poori, roti, paratha, naan, or rice in the cold season. It is very tasty to eat.

Tips:


  • To make it healthy, keep the level of chili and spices low.

  • You can also make it in a pressure cooker. After adding potatoes, peas, and water, pressure cook it till 2 whistles. If the vegetables are not cooked, let them cook for some time uncovered.

  • Do not let the spices burn.

  • You can increase or decrease the amount of water as per your taste.

  • If you want to make this more healthy you can add more vegetables in this.
